The Pardoner’s disregard for the poor reveals the Church’s hypocrisy.
Further Explanation:
Throughout the book, Chaucer employs satire to underline the hypocrisy and stupidity of people and institutions that are supposed to relieve the poor and the wretched from their sufferings and lead them on the path to spirituality are the very same people that seek to profit from their sufferings without caring for their well being. In a way, this reveals two things, the importance of religion in the lives of people, and the Church’s greed in seeking systematic destruction of the poorer classes by living on their hard-earned money. In this excerpt, the Pardoner is a part of the Church’s establishment, and he is supposed to share in the poverty and sufferings of his fellow men. However he insists on feeding on the best food and drink, which would be brought to him by his servants, and he would accept it, without even caring even if their children and family were perishing from famine. Thus, the Pardoner is an abomination of the very institution that he represents.
The Pardoner is a part of the Church and he is authorized with selling pardons to people who can afford to pay money for the redemption of their sins. The trade of the Pardoner is not an honest one, for he charges more than he is supposed to. He also claims to have religious relics in his possession that he offers for sale. The Pardoner actually preaches just to earn money for himself, and he berates the sins of people so that they would purchase more pardons from him. He usually targets the poor, without caring for their hardships. Thus, the person absolving the sinners is a sinner himself.
