In the story "Condensed Milk" by Varlam Shamalov the author, firstly, wanted to express the suffering that prisioners are expossed in a labor camp and how those difficulties can be lessened with small things such as condensed milk. Besides, the author gives a message: it's important to consider the possible consecuences of our decisions beyond the momentary benefits, and, even if we lose contanct with some people in the way, we need to look for our well-being first.
Explanation:
He expresses the suffering in different moments of the text, for example at the begining: "Internally, everything was burned out, devastated; we didn’t care, and we made plans only as far as the next day." Also, the author mentions the food they didn't have access in comparison to others luckier as Shestakov. Talking about the condensed milk, he was tempted by this as Shestakov offered that to continue with the scape plan, because that was his favorite "There are a lot of canned foods in the world – meat, fish, fruit, vegetables … But best of all was condensed milk" , he even dreamed about that precious food despide his conditions.
However, during the text the main character was reflecting about the possible consecuences that could bring, not for Shestakov but for him, as he expresses: "He’d make a group for an escape and turn everyone in. That was crystal clear. He’d pay for his office job with our blood, with my blood. They’d either kill us there, at Black Springs, or bring us in alive and give us an extra sentence – ten or fifteen years." At the end, he ate the condensed milk but he abandoned the plan; later, he let us know that the other who were with Shestakov were either killed or judged but nothing happened to Shestakov as he had expected. Finally, he lost contact with Shestakov but he didn't consider that an important matter, "He didn’t say hello to me, but there was really no reason for him to act that way. I mean, after all, two cans of condensed milk aren’t such a big deal." Giving us the lesson that sometimes, we should consider the things carefully and, in the process, not to be afraid of lossing people who did not care about us.
