George is mostly alienated from his college group because he differentiates himself from others as he thinks that he is rich and thus he is different from other.  

He is portrayed as an arrogant young boy.  He drives his own car and takes Beneatha on long drives in his fancy cars that he owns.  

He is seen controlling Beneatha as he argues against her decision to be a doctor.  He is not happy with her hairstyle.  He boasts of his wealth and is regarded as a snob by Beneatha.  

Although Beneatha likes George, she finds him not just shallow, but haughty too, who takes pride in his wealth and likes to show off his wealth.
