Antitussives, also known as antitussives or biochemicals, are drugs used in the symptomatic treatment of cough.

Generally, antitussives are not used alone and are often incorporated into preparations containing mucolytic expectorants and demulcent substances (syrups). It should be noted that several antitussives found in commerce are not appropriate, and in many cases have incompatibility in associations.  The initial goal of antitussive therapy is to decrease both the severity and frequency of cough, but without compromising the defense generated by the mucociliary system. Whenever this therapy is used, the cause of the cough should be sought so that the patient can perform the appropriate treatment. Thus, antitussives should always be adjunctive drugs in the treatment of conditions present in the respiratory tract.
