The conflict began, to some extent, over a difference about which waterway was Mexico's actual northern fringe: the Nueces or the Rio Grande. Slave proprietors were particularly vexed when Mexico banned subjugation in 1829. They needed to keep up subjugation so they could develop cotton. Austin convinced the legislature to permit slave proprietors to keep their slaves.
There were a few reasons for the contention between the American pilgrims and Mexico. To begin with, Mexico expected that they would lose Texas to the United States, so they began implementing laws that had been overlooked. At that point, Santa Anna picked up power and turned into a despot. There were gossipy tidbits that Santa Anna needed to drive Americans out of Texas. Americans needed to topple Santa Anna, so this began battling.
