Slave Codes were a series of laws that restricted the conducts of slaves. Slave Codes included severe punishing such as burns, lashes, cuts, and other punishments. They would be persecuted without indictment, they had their mobility restrained, they could not go where they wanted without their’s masters agreement. After the Civil War, slave codes still existed, ex-slaves could not rent or lease land outside of a town, they could not vote and even were prohibited from using the same places or doors from others.

Nat Turner was a self-educated man that started a slave revolt in 1831. He and his group of 60 murdered his master and his family. The group went off to more killing but the group scattered, Turner hid for a month but eventually, he was discovered and was executed.
Madison Washington also led one of the most successful slave revolts in the US. He was inside a boat being transported for the slave in New Orleans, he managed to gain the deck of the boat and him with other 18 other slaves rebelled, they killed one of the slave traders. The slaves took over the boat and navigated towards Nassau.
When they reached there they were freed in April 1842 and this revolt was considered the most successful in the US history.

The Southern had many arguments in favor of slavery, the first one was economy, they defended that if slavery was put to an end the US economy would be heavily impacted. Slave force was needed for the Southern economy, especially on plantations. The cotton economy would collapse, tobacco crop would dry in the fields and rice would cease being profitable.
Another Southern argument was that if slavery ended it would cause a major rise of unemployment and violence.
