The outcome of the US Presidential Election in 2000 was determined by the electoral college.
The US presidential election of 2000 was the contest between the Democratic candidate Al Gore, at that time vice president, and the Republican candidate George W. Bush, at that time governor of Texas and son of former president George HW Bush (1989-1993). Bill Clinton, the outgoing president, vacated the position of president after having served a maximum of two periods allowed by the 22nd Amendment.
Bush won the hard-fought election on Tuesday, November 7, with 271 electoral votes against Gore's 266 (with one translucent vote abstained in the official recount). During the elections the controversy arose in who had won the 25 electoral votes of Florida (and, therefore, the Presidency), the process of recounting in that state, and that the losing candidate had received 543,895 popular votes more than the winner.
In the US system of presidential elections, the electoral vote determines the winner, and Bush won this account, although Gore received the highest number of votes (the so-called "popular vote").
