In order to provide support to Spain against France, three nations formed what was called the Triple Alliance in 1668. The Dutch Republic, England, and Sweden allied to offer help to Spain. The problem was that King Louis XIV ordered the invasion of the territory called in that time the Spanish Netherlands, what today is part of Belgium. That land was a Spanish territory at that time. So, the formation of the Triple Alliance was the reaction for the invasion. The alliance also wanted to maintain a balance of power in Europe.
