In an attempt to unify the separated Korean peninsula, North Korea invaded South Korea. The goal of the North Korean government was to unite the country and hold elections as they were promised. The United Nations came to defend South Korea and the 38th parallel division set by the UN following World War II. After a stalemate occurred between both sides, an armistice was agree to and the division of Korea was reestablished.
