-Combine Like Terms

-Subtract 45 from both sides.

⇒ -0.5x + 45 = 40

            -45   -45

⇒ -0.5x = -5

-Divide by -0.5 on both sides

⇒ -0.5x/-0.5 = -5/-0.5

⇒ x = 10

That means we bought 10 Pounds of Chocolate.

Since Candy was 15-x, we can Substitute 10 as x, and Solve:

⇒ 15 - 10

⇒ 5

That means we bought 5 Pounds of Candy.

We bought 10 Pounds of Chocolate, and 5 Pounds of Candy.
