La historia de Portugal se remonta a alrededor de hace 400,000 años, cuando la región del actual Portugal estaba habitada por el Homo heidelbergensis. El fósil humano más antiguo es el cráneo descubierto en la Cueva de Aroeira en Almonda. Más tarde, los neandertales vagaron por el norte de la península ibérica. El homo sapiens llegó a Portugal hace unos 35,000 años.
Tribus pre-celtas como los lusitanos, Turduli y Oestriminis vivían en el centro y el norte. En el sur, los Cynetes vivieron en las regiones del Algarve y el Bajo Alentejo antes del siglo VI a. C., desarrollaron la ciudad de Tartessos y la lengua tartésica escrita, y dejaron muchas estelas en el sur del país. A principios del primer milenio antes de Cristo, oleadas de celtas de Europa Central invadieron y se casaron con las poblaciones locales para formar varios grupos étnicos y muchas tribus. Su presencia es rastreable, en líneas generales, a través de evidencia arqueológica y lingüística. Dominaron el área norte y central, mientras que el sur retuvo gran parte de su carácter tartésico, combinado con los celtas hasta la conquista romana. Algunos pequeños asentamientos comerciales semipermanentes fueron fundados por fenicios-cartagineses en la costa sur del Algarve.
En 1910, hubo una revolución que depuso a la monarquía. En medio de la corrupción, la represión de la iglesia y la casi bancarrota del estado, un golpe militar en 1926 instaló una dictadura que permaneció hasta otro golpe en 1974. El nuevo gobierno instituyó reformas democráticas radicales y otorgó la independencia a todas las colonias africanas de Portugal en 1975. Portugal es miembro fundador de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN), la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OCDE) y la Asociación Europea de Libre Comercio (AELC). Entró en la Comunidad Económica Europea (ahora la Unión Europea) en 1986.
