Deep inside the middle temporal lobe is the section of the brain identified as the limbic system, which comprises of the cingulate gyrus, the thalamus, the hypothalamus, the epithalamus, the mammillary body, hippocampus, the amygdala, and other organs, many of which are of relevance to the processing of memory.
In order to make the memories, data must be converted into a convenient form, which happens by the method known as encoding. Once data has been successfully encoded, it must be saved in memory for later use. Much of this collected memory lies outside of our consciousness most of the time, except when we really need to use it. The retrieval method enables us to bring stored memories into conscious awareness.
