When the X-rays gets scattered due to the interception of the beam with any object in its path then a secondary radiation is produced which is known as scatter radiation. The scatter radiation is responsible for reducing the contrast of the image that is produced and the amount of reduction of the contrast mainly depends on how much is the scattering of the radiation that is emerging out of the patient's body whose X-ray is being done.The contrast and the scatter are related to each other according to the mathematical relation as given below:Cs (%) = 100/S.
Where Cs is the contrast with scatter and S is the scatter factor.From the above relation it can be seen that there is an inverse relation between the contrast of the image produced and the scattering of the radiation.Hence, more the scattering the lesser would be the contrast.
