There was an old woman tossed up in a blanket,
Seventeen times as high as the moon,
Where she was going I could not but ask it,
For in her hand she carried a broom.
"Old woman, old woman, old woman," quoth l;
"O whither, O whither, O whither so high?"
"To sweep the cobwebs from the sky,
And I'll be with you by-and-by!"

the black man is richard wright's autobiography of his time from early childhood to the start of his job as a writer. his dad deserted this home shortly after they moved to memphis, leaving wright, his mother, and friend in dire straits. schooling throughout his childhood was erratic and frequently broken; he finally finished the 9th grade. domestic violence, mistreatment, and desire plagued him throughout his young. wright's first extended contact with whites came when he started taking odd jobs to make decent money for food. the discrimination and hostility he had in the jim crow region came as a bad surprise to him. time and again, richard was the object of white emotion because he neglected to conceal his real thoughts and beliefs behind the mask of servility and feeling. eventually, resolved to leave the region forever, richard scraped together enough money to go northward to michigan.
