During the civil war, the union benefitted from a steady stream of new immigrants, some of whom fought in the war. what kept the south from enjoying the same measure of ? immigrants did not want to travel to the confederacy. the union blockade kept many from arriving there. it was common knowledge the south was going to lose. there were no southern port cities for them to sail to.
