The Tokugawa shogunate (or Japanese Shogun) was overthrown of power when the capital of Edo, which is modern-day Tokyo, fell to military forces who supported the restoration of Emperor Meiji to Power in 1867. This was the key event that brought the Boshin War to an end.
On the 3rd of September of 1868, the city of Edo would have its name changed to Tokyo and Emperor Meiji would move its residence here.
